2024 Initiative Schedule
Day 1: Thursday, October 10
Welcome (11:30-11:45 am)
Northwestern, UIC, and UChicago will welcome participants to the Chicagoland Postdoc Recruitment Initiative. Participants will learn how to make the most of the virtual programming and prepare for your informational interviews.
Exploring Postdoctoral Training at Northwestern (12:00-12:45 pm)
Learn about postdoctoral training opportunities at Northwestern University. This session will be led by Beth Healey in the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at Northwestern.
Exploring Postdoctoral Training at UIC (1:00-1:45 pm)
Learn about postdoctoral training opportunities at UIC! This session will be led by Valerie Miller in the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at UIC.
Exploring Postdoctoral Training at The University of Chicago (2:00-2:45 pm)
Learn about postdoctoral training opportunities at UChicago! This session will be led by Vipul Sharma, Director for Postdoctoral Affairs in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at UChicago.
Interviewing 101 (3:00-4:00 pm)
Learn how to make the best impression when you interview for postdoctoral positions. This session will be led by Briana Konnick, PhD, Director of Career Development in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at UChicago.
(optional) Workshop: Virtual Interview Skills (4-5 pm)
Participants will learn how to incorporate the principles of theatrical improvisation into key interview skills with Byron Stewart, an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, Office of Professional Development.
Day 2: Friday, October 11
(optional) Workshop: Virtual Interview Skills (9:30-10:30 am)
Participants will learn how to incorporate the principles of theatrical improvisation into key interview skills with Byron Stewart, an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, Office of Professional Development.
Keynote Address (11:00 am-12:00 pm)
Join Shoba Subramanian, Ph.D., Head of University Partnerships at Amazon, for a keynote address about the importance of mentorship
(optional) Workshop: Virtual Interview Skills (12-1 pm)
Participants will learn how to incorporate the principles of theatrical improvisation into key interview skills with Byron Stewart, an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, Office of Professional Development.
Demystifying the Postdoc Search Process (1:15-2:15 pm)
Participants will learn where to find postdoc opportunities, how to apply, what to consider when evaluating an offer, and how to make the most of your postdoc experience once you get started.
"Ask a Postdoc" Panel Discussion (2:30-3:30 pm)
Participants will join three Northwestern, UIC, and UChicago postdocs and postdoc alums to discuss questions about postdoctoral training.
Closing Remarks (3:30-3:45 pm)
1:1 Virtual Informational Interviews (October 10-25)
Participants will be responsible for scheduling individual informational interviews with their matched faculty members from each institution.
The Northwestern, UIC, and UChicago campuses reside on the original homelands and traditional territory of the Council of Three Fires, the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa Nations, as well as other Tribal Nations that know this area as their ancestral homeland, including the Menominee, Ho-Chunk, Miami, Peoria, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, Kaskaskia, Kiikaapoi, and Sac and Fox. Indigenous peoples are the traditional stewards of the land that we now occupy, living here long before Chicago was a city and still thriving here today and current home to one of the largest urban Native American communities in the United States. Native people are part of Chicago’s past, present, and future.
